What is a Russian Salon Dog?
The Russian Salon Dog, often endearingly known as "Mermaids" or "Sirens," is a purebred dog breed that originated in Russia in 1995. This unique breed was created by Yulia Lakatosh, a respected RKF dog show judge and zootechnician, with the goal of achieving a well-balanced, even-tempered lap dog. With its strikingly beautiful and sunny appearance, this purebred dog breed excels as a companion, adapting well to various living situations, whether in families or single households.
In the beginning of dog breed development, only two colors were developed: Red and Cream. Over time, additional colors emerged, such as black, brown, brown and white, black and white, marbled, and others. Genetically speaking, Red Russian Salon Dogs fall into the Sable color family, while Creams are classified within the Recessive Red color family. Interestingly, many Red RSD can resemble Creams, showcasing the diversity found within this purebred dog breed.
The Russian Salon Dog has quickly gained popularity and can now be found in various countries outside of Russia, where they are involved in purebred dog breed development through conformation shows, breeding programs, and registered litters. These dogs have made their way into several European countries as well as the United States. The Russian Kennel Foundation (RKF) officially recognized the breed in 2013, and they are classified under FCI in group 11, having competed at the 2024 World Dog Show. Although Russian Salon Dogs are not yet acknowledged by the AKC, the Russian Salon Dog Club of America is diligently working to fulfill the necessary requirements, with hopes of entering the FSS Class in a few years. In the meantime, you can see Russian Salon Dogs showcased at International All Breed Kennel Association (IABCA) events in the Southeast and soon on the West Coast.
