Other Color Variety (OCV) Program

OCV Breed Development & Preservation Program

The Russian Salon Dog Registry of America (RSDRA) recognizes that the Other Color Variety (OCV) of the Russian Salon Dog is still in the early stages of development within the United States and remains significantly smaller in population than the traditional red and cream varieties.

The RSDRA Other Color Variety (OCV) program is modeled after ongoing preservation and development efforts within Russia, where the Other Color Variety population also currently remains under an open stud book system. Due to the limited population size and developing bloodlines within the variety, carefully managed outcrossing programs continue to be utilized to help preserve genetic diversity and strengthen long-term breed sustainability.

Due to the limited number of unrelated OCV dogs currently available, the RSDRA maintains an open stud book for the Other Color Variety program for a limited time.

Under this program, carefully selected and approved outcrosses to non-standard colored Yorkshire Terrier type dogs of accepted OCV coloration may be permitted on a case-by-case basis in order to help preserve genetic diversity and support the long-term development and sustainability of the variety.

These outcrosses are intended solely to:

  • expand genetic diversity,
  • reduce risks associated with a limited gene pool,
  • improve overall health and vitality,
  • and assist in the continued development of the Other Color Variety while maintaining Russian Salon Dog type, structure, and temperament.

All outcrosses must be approved by the RSDRA prior to breeding consideration. Dogs used within the program should closely align with Russian Salon Dog breed goals in structure, coat texture, temperament, movement, and overall appearance.

The long-term goal of the program is to gradually transition toward a more genetically stable and self-sustaining population of Other Color Variety Russian Salon Dogs, at which time the open stud book may be closed in the future.

Outcross Approval Requirements

All proposed outcross dogs must be individually evaluated and approved by the RSDRA prior to breeding consideration or acceptance into the OCV program.

Approved outcross dogs must have a documented pedigree from an approved foreign or domestic registry and must closely align with the Russian Salon Dog standard in overall type, structure, coat texture, temperament, and movement.

Dogs accepted into the program must display coloration consistent with the accepted Other Color Variety Russian Salon Dog color program and must demonstrate traits considered beneficial to the long-term preservation and development of the variety.

Dogs may additionally be required to be evaluated in conformation against the Russian Salon Dog standard prior to acceptance into the program.

All approved outcross submissions must include the required documentation, photographs, pedigree information, and any additional materials requested by the program or registrar prior to pedigree creation and registry entry.

Once approved, the dog will be issued an RSDRA foundation pedigree and entered into the registry under the OCV program designation.

Health Testing Requirements

All dogs approved for use within the OCV Outcross Program must complete the following minimum health testing requirements prior to breeding approval:

Required OFA Evaluations:

• OFA Patella Evaluation

• OFA Cardiac Evaluation

• OFA CAER Eye Examination

Required DNA Testing:

• Hyperuricosuria (HU)

• Primary Lens Luxation (PLL)

• Degenerative Myelopathy (DM)

Dogs used within the program must be genetically Clear or Carrier for these conditions. No affected dogs will be approved for breeding use.

Additional health testing may be requested or recommended by the RSDRA based upon pedigree review, health history, or future program development.

These requirements are intended to help preserve the health, breed type, and long-term sustainability of the Other Color Variety Russian Salon Dog population while responsibly expanding genetic diversity within a limited gene pool.

Please Note:

The OCV Program Coordinator position is currently under review and pending appointment by the board.

Once a coordinator has been officially selected and approved, their contact information and submission procedures will be added and made publicly available for members and participants of the OCV Outcross Program.
